We Take On Nauvoo!

A friend of mine is a missionary in Nauvoo, IL as a performer in the Brass Band. Because Rachel and I missed her so much, we decided to take the 5 hour drive down.

We first checked into our hotel. The reason I’m adding in this pretty obvious detail is because there’s a funny catch to it. While planning our trip to Nauvoo, our friend’s mom told us NOT to stop in Monmouth for a bathroom break because there’s a slaughterhouse there and the whole town reeks. Instead, what do we do? We forget all about that detail and end up staying in that very town OVERNIGHT. Luckily (maybe a blessing?) the town did not reek either day we were there! Woohoo!

Once we got to Nauvoo it was evening and we watched the Brass Band perform and saw a little show called Sunset By The Mississippi. Both were phenomenal! The Brass Band had an immense amount of talent and the show was totally Broadway material. 😉

After that we went to a fair and talked to a few nice, young ladies who were about our age. They even asked about my ring, thinking I was married!

Once the fair was over, we went back to our hotel, which was about an hour out. Needless to say, in the middle of nowhere and 6 feet tall cornfields on either side, we made it in less than an hour on that dark, cloudy night.

The next day we woke up early to see the Brass Band on wheels performance. It was super fun to follow our friend around and see her perform. We could definitely tell the Spirit was working within her because her smiles were wider than I even knew she could smile! She was happy the ENTIRE time- and so were those around her. In fact, all of the missionaries young and old were always happy!

After her performance we went to tour an old house, watched another performance, learned how to make candles in the old days (which, by the way, was using animal fat), and played some good ol’ fashioned games / learned to walk on stilts!

Overall, our trip to Nauvoo was wonderful! That place definitely has a special vibe goin’ around, and I’m so happy that my friend gets to be a part of it!
