Last Sunday I was at church and I was experiencing some mild stomach discomfort at the beginning of the service (and just before arriving). The church always starts out with a few songs of contemporary worship- the kinds of songs like “No Longer Slaves” or “Oh My Soul”. During this time I decided to do something that I haven’t always been comfortable with.
Backstory: at the end of worship, the pastor mentions various things to pray over. During worship, he often gets ‘messages from God’ to pray over certain things for specific people in the service. Now, he doesn’t call them out specifically, but he mentions the problem. He doesn’t know who it is specifically. Often times it’s things like lower back pain or something more emotional.
During my prayer I asked God to show Himself through the service with my stomach aches. I asked Him to speak through the church leaders so that I can see if He really is listening to my prayers. I prayed for him to heal my stomach ache and I specifically mentioned that I “expected” him to show himself to me through the service somehow. Then I questioned if it was okay to expect something of God. I didn’t know if we could just simply expect Him to do something. I moved on and continued to worship.
Then, after worship our Pastor did his usual prayer request as explained above. I was so excited! I decided in worship that I had enough faith in Him that he WILL answer my prayer. You’ve heard that some prayers are answered in ways you didn’t ask for or expect, right? Well, that happened. He answered my prayer loud and clear.
Our Pastor said that he felt that some people were struggling with expecting things of God and whether or not that was okay. Wow. I used to think that kind of thing was creepy/weird/sort of unnatural, but it is SO COOL. He went on to say that OF COURSE we can expect things of him. He is there For Us and that is amazing. It was a huge step in my faith that He actually is listening and can use others to shine His unending light.
I encourage you to expect things of God this week and see how He answers those prayers. It could end up being super amazing.
